Can speech and language therapy help my child?
Yes.
Children of all abilities can improve their communication skills with the right help.
Speech and language therapy at pre-school and/or reception age often prevents potential problems at school.
Speech and language difficulties have most effect on forming friendships, and curriculum achievements in speaking and listening and literacy, though good speech and language skills are clearly helpful in all areas.
Children with physical or learning disabilities may benefit from a range of approaches, according to their needs. These may include use of signing, or pointing to objects, pictures or symbols, as well as direct work on speech. These approaches are used to encourage speech and to prevent frustration.
Some children receive speech and language therapy from the NHS. These families use Speech Symbol and Sign when they feel their children are not getting enough therapy, or are waiting too long for it. Private and NHS therapists work closely together to ensure children get maximum benefits from their therapy.
